Sacramento Children's Home's Crisis Nurseries receive funding from First 5 Sacramento Commission
The Sacramento Children’s Home has good news to share! On February 8th the First 5 Sacramento Commission unanimously voted to award the Sacramento Crisis Nurseries for residential crisis intervention services and emergency child care. The Commission’s award of $7 million of the Children’s Home’s proposal continues their support of the program through 2015. The vote to award the Nurseries was the result of the Home’s dedication to the Crisis Nurseries program.
While the Home is extremely excited about this award and the Commission’s investment of our program, staff also realizes that it needs to continue its advocacy and fundraising efforts. First 5 Sacramento Commission funds a substantial portion of the Sacramento Crisis Nurseries, but 36% or about $400,000 of our operating budget needs to come from other sources each year. Efforts to close the funding gap include submitting numerous grant proposals to public and private entities as well as the fundraising efforts of the Friends of Crisis Nurseries and the generous support of the public.

CHP cadets - take II
The Sacramento Children's Home has a wonderful relationship with the California Highway Patrol - Office of Risk Management - Occupational Safety Unit. So, for the second time in six months 60 CHP cadets helped the Home’s maintenance department. The original plan was to paint a section of the cottages for the Home’s youngest residents (boys and girls ages 6-11), including the living rooms, hallways and bedrooms. However, those dedicated men and women not only finished painting the entire cottage in no time, they also helped with other projects on the SCH campus. All projects were finished almost 2 hours ahead of schedule – so everyone had left when local media visited the campus. We cannot wait to have the cadets back! Thank you California Highway Patrol and the officers in charge of the program!

SCH Volunteers are honored at 09 Volunteer Spirit Awards
Lifetime Achievement Award

Lou Watts, Kay Messmer and Carol Williams
Every year the Volunteer Center of Sacramento honors outstanding volunteers at their annual Volunteer Spirit Awards. The Lifetime Achievement award is presented to volunteers with a minimum of 10 consecutive years of service in the greater Sacramento area for one or more charitable, public or private nonprofit organizations. This year, the winners are three members of the Home’s Los Ninos Service League auxiliary. Kay Messmer, Carol Williams and Lou Watts are not only members of the founding group who opened the Casa Garden Restaurant * over 35 years ago, they have worked to operate the restaurant on a daily basis for the past 35 years.
* Over the years several volunteer auxiliaries have been founded to assist in raising funds for the Children's Home and have become an integral part of the services involved with the Home. Founded in 1973, the Los Ninos Service League has operated Casa Garden Restaurant to provide ongoing financial and moral support to the children and families served by the Children's Home.

California ISO volunteers paint Meeting Center & Offices

Twenty-six California ISO employees came to the Home's main campus and painted the exteriror of the building that houses the Casa Garden Restaurant’s Meeting Center and the Home’s Fund Development & Communications Office. The building was in desperate need of a fresh coat of paint and after the volunteers spent the entire Friday – equvilant to a $4000 donation – it looks fantastic and now matches the colors of the restaurant. California ISO is a long time supporter of the Children’s Home and has helped with several facility-maintenance projects. California ISO has donated to various programs as well.

Party with a Purpose

Linda and Tom are long-time supporters of the Sacramento Children's Home.
For the past eight years, they have invited friends and business partners into their home - encouraging everyone to support us as well. It is a tradition that Linda and Tom present the Home with a check at the "Party with a Purpose" every year. This year's contribution will help the Home to rebuild the Cowell Cottage - home of our youngest residents.
Thank you, Linda and Tom.

Good morning, Sir ... how can we help?

The Home received much appreciated help from 50 police cadets this Saturday.
The cadets are enrolled in the California Highway Patrol Company A Cadet Training Class – 1 – 09. While helping the Home, cadets earned credits for their mendatory “Community Policing” class. California Highway Patrol Officer Rodriquez says that “this program it’s not just part of the curriculum, it also jumpstarts those officer’s volunteer activities.” He shared that most officers in their department volunteer many hours in their communities and are eager to help. The Home experienced that first hand: on a single morning, those young men and women painted the Home’s Cowell Center’s interior, two cottages inside and outside and landscaped the surroundings of the Pat Anderson Education Center. SCH staff Troy Madere and Thomas Schnittgrund, who worked extra hours on Saturday, could not believe their eyes – 50 cadets worked like clockwork. So, 35 cubic yards of bark, for instance, where not only put into the flower beds, but sidewalks were brushed up and cleaned as well within an hour.
Within in a few weeks the cadets will be graduating and departure to their assigned areas, including Modesto, Reno, West Los Angeles or stay in Sacramento. We are certain those cadets will make fine officers! Thank you!

Thanks to Heart of Central California
Girl Scout Troop 1213
Last year, our troop, Heart of Central California Girl Scout Troop 1213, approached the Sacramento Children’s Home volunteer coordinator, Judy Shefer, requesting an opportunity to complete the earning of our Silver Award through redecorating the Family Therapy Room at the Home.
Judy accepted the offer and we were so delighted because this was the exact service opportunity we had discussed as a troop that would be perfect for the completion of our Silver Award. We had already saved some money from previous years Cookie Sales, Magazine and Candy Sales and Garage Sales, but now we needed another $1,500.00 to be able to really complete this job the way they wanted to do it.
The balance of the money we raised by working hard on another year of Cookies Sales, Magazine and Candy Sales, but we also hosted a Service Unit wide Mother and Daughter Tea. That event really put us is a good place in having the money to do a nice job on the room. In addition, the troop mailed letters to local business’s requesting support for the project. Ranganath Pathak, MD., COSTCO, Target and Asyst Data Group, Inc., all responded with generous donations that helped make this redecorating project amazing.Special thanks to John Shaver of Shaver Construction - the man who painted the room.
Redecorating the Children’s Home was a wonderful experience and a great service opportunity for our Silver Award. We learned so much about budgeting, raising money, organizing, working with guests and customers, setting priorities, working together, and the most fun lesson of all, decorating and painting.
Thank you so much for giving us this opportunity!
Hannah Lee, Girls Scout Troop 1213

Carnival
Every year the Children’s Home celebrates the end of the school year with a carnival. Sponsors for this big event have varied. This year we were happy to have Pricewaterhouse Cooper, LLP sponsor our carnival. To begin we had a tee shirt design contest, where residents of the home could draw a design and compete in the contest. The winning design was put on tee shirts for all residents, staff and employees of PWC. We had an egg drop contest, horseshoe contest, relays, bounce houses, dunk tank, water slide, horse back riding, and a huge BBQ for all. All who attended had a wonderful time. The Children’s Home would like to thank PWC for funding this event and the 61 employees for all the work they did to put it on. We are truly thankful to you for supporting our kids.

SCH Graduation
The Home celebrated our residents at the annual Graduation Ceremony. Many families, relatives and community members joined the students and staff for a great evening. We honored our 6th and 8th grade graduates, high school graduates, and those achieving honor roll status, attendance awards, and special sprit awards and recognitions.
This year many children were recognized for their efforts and successes at school and at the Home. The large number of children honored is partially due to our very successful SCH education program which includes an after school home work assistance and tutoring component. Roy Alexander, CEO stated that, “this year is the best year we ever had in terms of our residents succeeding in school. Something we can be very proud about.” Family members approached staff after the ceremony and expressed how great the event was and how much the Sacramento Children’s Home has helped their children. For Michael Petersen, Director of 24 Hour Programs, that was a very special moment. “All too often we focus on the problems, obstacles and incidents but this graduation was a wonderful reminder that there is indeed great work being done at the Sacramento Children’s Home.”

Community Partner: PG&E

A group of 27 employees from PG&E’s Civic Partnership and Community Initiatives Program selected the Sacramento Children’s Home main campus as the site of their annual volunteer event. The grounds was in great need of sprucing up for the big graduation ceremonies a week away. 15 yards of sand and bark were spread around playgrounds and gardens. Weeds were pulled and garden areas were raked. PG&E also made a donation to help pay for the materials.
The events culmination was lunch at the Casa Garden Restaurant on the grounds of the Children’s Home. The restaurant, run by volunteers, has given over two and a half million dollars during its 34 years of existence to the Children’s Home. We were delighted the PG&E employees chose to help us clean the campus and support the Casa Garden Restaurant.

SCH receives support from the Rotary Club of Sacramento
The Rotary Club of Sacramento donated $4000 in support of the Home's Crisis Nursery North.
The mission of the Crisis Nurseries program is to prevent child abuse and neglect by providing support to families at of crisis through emergency care for their children. A critical element in the prevention of child abuse is the availability of respite care for children in order to protect and keep them safe during times when their parents are eperiencing extreme stress. Crisis Nurseries services are voluntary, confidential and at no cost to the family. Between July 2008 and today the Crisis Nursery North served over 1000 children and over 600 families. Unfortunately, the tendency is increasing - we are projecting that we will serve nearly twice as many children and families compared to 2007-2008.
By supporting the Sacramento Children's Home and its Crisis Nurseries program, the Rotary Club of Sacramento is helping the community and prevents child abuse and neglect.

SacBee on Home's Special Friend program
The Sacramento Children's Home has changed a lot since it was founded downtown in 1867 to provide "a home, education, and support for the orphan, half-orphan, and destitute children" of the county. In 1905, the Children's Home opened its main campus on Sutterville Road, and on my recent visit, I got a history lesson from Judy Schefer, now celebrating her 40th year working as the volunteer coordinator. ...

A Great Easter Story
In September 2008, Amanda approached the Home’s Volunteer Coordinator: she wanted to do something for the Sacramento Children’s Home towards her Girl Scouts Silver Award project. After considering all the options, Amanda decided she would like to do as many Spring baskets as possible. To support the project Amanda organized a Father Daughter 50’s Dance and each couple attending brought a $5 gift card to a store. This money along with many donations from family and church friends allowed the remarkable number of 132 baskets delivered to the Home!!!
Amanda, thank you for making Easter special for so many of our children!

Crisis Nursery South to Reopen This Summer:
Services For Parents of Children 0-5 in South Sacramento
Thanks to an $853,000 grant from the First 5 Sacramento Commission, the Sacramento Children’s Home can reopen the south area Crisis Nursery and again offer local families in crisis a place to keep their children safe while rebuilding a support system.
A program of the Sacramento Children’s Home, the Crisis Nursery was reduced to one nursery in the north area in 2007 when lack of funds forced the south area nursery to close. A current First 5 Sacramento Commission fund recipient for the north nursery, the decision to reopen the nursery stemmed from the increased cases of child neglect and death in Sacramento County. “The Crisis Nursery is a prevention program for families providing safety net services before an intervention by the county is necessary,” said Roy Alexander, Director of the Sacramento Children’s Home. “Now more than ever with the economic recession, it is important that there will be two Crisis Nurseries to help parents day and night—they are not alone.”
Today, the Crisis Nursery North offers emergency child care, 7a.m.-7p.m. AND 24-hour shelter for up to 30 days for children ages 0-5. Comprehensive parenting education and counseling is provided and a designated case manager works with the family while their child stays in the program. Transportation services are also offered to the families.
The First 5 Sacramento Commission grant will allow the Sacramento Children’s Home to offer emergency child care to ten additional children and eight 24-hour beds.
“Families need support during times of stress and children need to be in a safe environment to avoid potential neglect or abuse,” said Roger Dickinson, Chair of the First 5 Sacramento. “It is vital that parents have family support services to help them meet the needs of their children.”
The Crisis Nurseries prevention services keep families from falling into the system. As of the end of February 2009, the Crisis Nurseries program has served 6000 children and 4300 families in Sacramento County. At exit, 95% of families felt that the crisis nursery program reduced risk of their child being harmed. Additionally, 24% of families in the 24-hour shelter program felt that their child would have likely been placed in foster care if they had not received help from the Crisis Nursery. Another 76% of parents reported reduced stress level after utilizing the Crisis Nursery. The success of the program depends on parents being aware of having this option because the program is voluntary, confidential and free for the family!

SCH alumnus celebrates 100th Birthday!
The Home has provided a safe haven for many children who came to the Home for a variety of reasons for 142 years.
The Home’s oldest former resident – Carl Becker – celebrates his 100th birthday at the Casa Garden Restaurant next to the Home on April 6, 2009.
Carl Becker, born April 1, 1909, lived at the Home from July 1915 until December 1919 when he was six years old. Carl lived at the Home together with his two brothers. At admission, his older brother Edwin was eight years old and his younger brother Elmer was a baby and just over one month old. Both of Carl’s brothers are now deceased. There is no information about the reason why the three brothers were admitted. What is known is that Carl’s father, originally from Iowa and married in Sacramento, admitted them together on July 28, 1915.
Carl has many fond memories of living at the Home. He remembers sitting under the two palm trees watching horse and buggies go by, and “once in a while a Pierce Arrow car would pass.”
Carl lives now in Sacramento and will be accompanied by his daughter, Patricia, a Sacramento resident and teacher.

SCH Volunteer Coordinator celebrates 40th Anniversary
The heart of the Home is our dedicated staff; our counselors, clinicians, therapists and administrative staff make all the difference! The Sacramento Children’s Home takes great pride in having a staff that truly cares for children and families – often for a lifetime. One out of 10 employees worked for the Home for over 10 years.
In March 2009, Judy Schefer, our Volunteer Coordinator celebrates her 40th Anniversary of employment. Her career at the Home started on March 13, 1969 as a part-time - full time (meaning working full time without benefits) child care worker in Cowell cottage – the Home of our youngest residents. Later in her career, Judy managed the cottage program which gives her a great perspective and understanding in matching volunteers with our kids. Asked about her time at the Home, Judy says “I have been blessed to reap the rewards of working at one agency for so many years. The number of alumni that come back to tell me their warm stories of living here is heartwarming. If I was to pick one thing that stands out its having children find a “forever home” through the special friend program.” At 40 years, she finds this point in her career to be the best as it allows her to reach out and tell the public about this very special place.
“Judy is a fine example why the Sacramento Children’s Home is an outstanding organization. She exemplifies the dedication, heart, compassion and hard work. I am very grateful for her service,” Roy Alexander, CEO.

The Guild’s Eleventh Annual Crab Feed
The Guild’s Eleventh Annual Crab Feed was held on February 21, 2009 at the Folsom Community Center. We were thrilled to have a sold out crowd of 445 people!
Our guest speaker, Anthony Stewart, who is a former resident of the Sacramento Children’s Home, shared memories of how the Home impacted his life and taught him essential skills to succeed and accomplish his goals. Everyone was very touched by Anthony’s speech and it reminds us how much our support for the Home is needed.
We were pleased with the results of both our silent and live auctions. The highlight of our live auction was a cake from Karen’s Bakery which sold for $1,300. And we greatly appreciated the donations for the soon to be remodeled cottage.
The Crab Feed continues to be successful each year because of the support from our community. The Guild would like to thank the 19 table sponsors, including our Grand Sponsor, Roebbelen Construction. Thank you to the student volunteers from U.C. Davis and Sacramento State University who continue to support our event each year.
We would also like to specially thank Roy Lasich (Caterer), Michele Kane (Mistress of Ceremonies) and Gene Paine (Auctioneer) who have supported our event for several years and are already on board for next year.
The Guild looks forward to our Crab Feed next year–please save the date for February 20, 2010

Tuesday, November 4: SCH staff recognized for excellent services!
Brian Bowman, who is a supervisor at the Home's Transition Age Program, received one of the Heroes of Human Services in Sacramento County awards from the County Board of Supervisors.
Robert C. Hall, a boardmember of the Sacramento Chidren's Home, was recognized for his incredible support of the Home as well.

(f.l.t.r.) Roy Alexander, CEO, Sacramento Children's Home; Robert Hall, Supervisor Roger Dickinson, Sacramento County Board of Supervisors; Brian Bowman
from the nomination letter for Brian Bowman (written by the mother of one of the Home's clients)
My son has been receiving Mental Health services all of his life. We have seen a lot of people come and go. Brian has and continues to set a calm assertive influence in his life. He is just the kind of exemplary individual that people want to influence their kids. He is someone you trust as a parent; you know that he will say the right things. He won’t take sides and say bad things about parents just to get on the kids good side. He has never been inappropriate with my son. My son has been known to act out quite a bit, but not when he is with Brian. I suspect that he wants Brian’s respect. Isn’t that the kind of person that deserves an award? I think so!
from the nomination letter for Robert Hall:
Bob Hall is an unsung hero. He works behind the scenes to complete building projects, introduces the Children’s Home to influential legislators and advocates for our clients. He respects the 141 year history of the Children’s Home and is a visionary for the future. He lives his belief of making the community better by donating his financial resources, professional expertise and time. The financial contributions alone to the Children’s Home are of immense value to the Home. The Children’s Home is forever grateful to Bob for his passionate dedication and advocacy.
